Getting back into Skegness from the Greencock Farm was a trickier affair than getting out. The roads leading up to the bank had all been blocked, which necessarily entailed the clock tower roundabout and much of the promenade being closed as well. The Lumley roundabout at the other end of the high street was in almost total gridlock. Flashing lights and sirens would not avail Camara here. There was nowhere for traffic to get out of his way.

“Mount the pavement,” said Sam, “and drive down to my office.”

The old burned out DefCon4 office was just off the roundabout. The windows of the upstairs offices had been boarded up. It gave the place an edgy, derelict feel, like it might be an illicit drug den. This gave the place a greater sense of coolness than it really deserved. Camara parked on the pavement, which was as wide as two cars, and left a police notice in the window before getting out.

Sam noticed that Cat’s Café, next to the old office, was shut with a sign in the window that read Closed due to Theatrical Emergency.

“Jeez,” Sam muttered.

There were thick crowds down this end of Lumley Road, people eager to get a view of the crisis going on a hundred metres away. Sam marvelled that one of the shops had set up a sandy play area. It seemed they had laid a tarpaulin, dumped a few bags of sand, and were charging for the opportunity to enter. Plenty of parents were queuing up so that their children could go and build a sandcastle, while their mums and dads got on with the adult pastime of staring at the bank.

Camara directed Sam down a parallel shopping street that circumvented the cordoned off area and the crowds. A jink through narrow roads brought them up behind the amusement arcade and the metal stairs that led to Rich’s rooftop HQ.

Peninsula was waiting with a tray of Buck’s Fizz, and a table laid out with finger sandwiches and bite-sized cakes.

“Lunchtime refreshments?” he suggested. Both Sam and Camara ignored him.

“Hey,” said Rich, waving them over to his observation position. He had a huge pair of binoculars on a fixed stand, trained on the action in the middle distance.

“I’ve got something I need to show to you both.”

“We’ve got a question to ask you,” said Sam.

“Let me tell you how I can help you,” said Rich with a wink to Sam. “I have another potential way to end this, and it’s a doozy.”

“Yes?”

“I’ve been working my way through the ranks of the Great British Cabbage Collective—”

“That’s a thing?” asked Sam.

“It is. We have to know who we’re dealing with, yeah. When it comes to understanding Bruce, these are the people in the know.”

Sam could see some sense in what Rich was saying.

“I’ve told them I’ll make a substantial donation to their seed bank project if they can get me some information. I need a bunch of facts or questions that will stop a cabbage expert in their tracks. Make them realise we’re serious about cabbages.
